Our story

Black Bird Beekeepers began in 2020 in response to the pandemic as a way for the founder, Darin Wimbush Johnson, to create an eco-friendly, health-promoting, and sustainable business that he will be able to pass down to his sons and future generations.

Darin came from humble beginnings in the small town of Bassett, Virginia where he helped his grandfather farm and his grandmother use what the land sowed to create healthy and delicious dishes. Oftentimes, they would harvest enough to share throughout the community. From this, Darin fell in love with leveraging what nature provides and turning them into fantastic products for the welfare of others.

The benefits that honey provides are unmatched. Studies suggest that honey might offer antidepressant, anticonvulsant and anti-anxiety, and memory benefits. Topical use of medical-grade honey has been shown to promote wound healing, particularly in burns.

Darin immediately recognized the benefits of honey and wanted to harness what he’d learned over the years at his family’s farm, culminated through months of beekeeping classes and studying the business of Apiculture. Darin is an interstate Beekeeper, has had the pleasure of being a member of the North Carolina Beekeepers Association, the Durham County Beekeepers Association, and the Southwest Piedmont Beekeepers Association of Southern Virginia.

He has a philosophy of balance - old techniques, coupled with unique/innovative ways of harvesting honey. Darin believes Black Bird Beekeepers lives at the intersection of passion and skill.

Our Ingredients

Black Bird Beekeepers Honey is locally sourced. Darin ensures the care of more than 40,000 bees at his apiary. Darin’s bees cultivate/curate, in our opinion, the world’s best honey.
